A leading diamond export company Hare Krishna Exports Pvt. Ltd., has recently rejected a job aspirant’s application just because he is a Muslim.
Zeshan Ali Khan, a 23 year old student who has done his MBA in International Business applied to Hare Krishna Exports Pvt. Ltd. on Tuesday as he realised the company’s global market presence. He applied for a job along with his other friends expecting a positive reply from the company, which has its main office in Mumbai. They took only 15 minutes to see the first line in the resume – his name – and respond: “Thanks for your application. We regret to inform you that we hire only non-Muslim candidates.“
“Along with a bunch of friends, I forwarded my resume to the company. Almost half of them were immediately placed. I got a reply within 20 minutes of my application. I was shocked when I read it,” Khan told The Hindu.
“Initially, I thought it was a joke. Had they wanted to reject my application they could have given other excuses…,” he added.
Two of his MBA classmates, Mukund Mani and Omkar Bansode, got called to the interview. Zeshan told NDTV: “I was shocked. I took a screenshot and posted it on social media… Activists from across the country said I should go to the police and file a case of religious discrimination.”

As the case has gained attention after Khan posted his experience on Facebook on Tuesday, May 19. A company representative told NDTV: “The HR trainee who denied job to Zeeshan Khan has been suspended. The company maintains it’s an error and not the company policy.” The Hindu reported that soon after the email went viral, the company sent a mail expressing regret. “We would like to clarify that the company does not discriminate against candidates based on gender, caste, religion, etc. Any hurt caused in the matter is deeply regretted,” Mahendra S. Deshmukh, Associate VP & Head-HR told The Hindu.
His MBA classmates and friends who eventually got the job, have turned down the offer in solidarity.
It's really sad to see the religion based discrimination still exists. Please share this story!
